well just to let everyone know, my results came back positive today for THC. This really sucks and I feel like I want to explode. Ok, let me stop... I want to explode because there is so much feeling of relief and excitement after being notified that my results came back negative and everything is all good!!



ok, I will share my personal experience to all who may take this is as advice/comfort for an upcoming test:

I used the substitution method from N2 and dilution as a backup.
I must say that confidence and practicing will allow you to feel more relaxed when substituting.

I got some clean urine from a friend who was without a doubt clean. The liquid gold was freshly given to me at 9pm the night before my test. It was stored in the fridge until 1pm test day (16 hours in fridge) where it was warmed up using tap water for 10 minutes.

I purchased a 2.5oz (75mL) Old Spice body wash from walmart for $0.97. The bottle was made with very thin plastic, which allows it to be easily warmed using body heat. I did a lot of practice just crotching the bottle and measured the temps consistently between 93-96 degrees but I only reached a temp of 96 2 out of the 15 times I did the routine. I guess its because I'm only a medium build (5'10 150lb).

This discouraged me and due to the fact that I would not accept failing this test in any way, I decided to use heat pads. My method worked perfectly in that I was able to heat and consistently maintain the sample at 98-99 degrees for 3 hours. I simply bought Well Heat Pads (air activated and 1 adhesive side) and 2 pairs of tighty whiteys. About an hour before my test, I placed a heat pad on my outside pair of tighties in the vicinity of where the piss bottle will be resting. I put the first pair of tighties on, then the pair with the heat pad, put on some jeans, and tucked the bottle in the hot spot between your nuts and butthole.

Notice I did not wrap the heat pad around the bottle due to experience teaching me that doing so would heat the bottle up to 105 deg. Thats why I put it on the outside pair of underwear so that it would heat the bottle up to a reasonable temperature. I used a digital thermometer the whole time while practicing so that I would not need anything except for the thermal sticker on the side of the collection cup to monitor the temperature.

Test day: I went to the on site center, was escorted to the clinic, did my unsupervised substitution, and walked out of there. The temp sticker displayed a 98 degree reading so I swirled it on the top of the toilet for about 10 seconds. This made a green circle on the 96deg mark and a tan cirlce on the 98deg mark. Tan markings indicate a (-1deg) which meant a 97deg reading. I turned in the sample and she didnt even check the temp!!

all that hard practicing .. lol.. it was worth it though. Many other test centers immediately check the temp. That lady was just really sweet and even told me I could flush the toilet. So that went pretty smooth and I walked out the place feeling good but still really nervous.

Well I got the call today at 2:45 pm saying that everything was good and I came back negative. I took my test at the clinic, sent to labcorp at 3:00 yesterday, and results received in less than 24 hours.

Hope someone out there can take my experience as some added comfort to performing substitution. Its the only guaranteed method other than abstinence when taking unsupervised pre-employment exams. And remember ... PRACTICE AND PRACTICE!!!

Believe me, she checked the temp. When we pick up the cup to pour it into the vials, the temp strip is facing us. As we pour, it only takes a glance to see what the temp is. We don't need to pick up the cup and declare out loud for the world to hear what the temp is. Either it is in range (there is a green dot somewhere between 90 - 100 degrees) or it isn't.

NOT checking the temp is considered a "fatal flaw". That means that a collector who didn't check the temp and/or neglected to note the temp on the CCF would have to go through training and practical testing again before being allowed to collect for DOT tests again.

Nice description, good advice and reasoning for what you did or didn't do. You are proof that proper planning makes for a passing grade!!!
