Laboratories also pay for the manufacture and shipping of testing kits to collection sites, the printing of custody and control forms and shipping those forms to the employers, they also pay for the overnight shipping of the urine specimens to the laboratory, and most do not charge the employer $20. The average cost to employers for laboratory fees is only about $15-18. In addition to that, they must pay for their labor, insurance (which is astronomical) and overhead. They also must go through extensive calibration and verification checks quite frequently; all on the laboratory's dime.

Yes, they make a profit, but it isn't as much as you think. It is more like $2-$3 per test
