Hello everyone...

I just tested this morning for my new job, and was given a rapid test (RapidTox, actually) for the NIDA 5 illegals. The nurse told me that I came up a "non-negative," and that the test would be sent to MedTox for further analysis. Depending on the results there, I may have to re-test in a few days.

I have been clean for 38 days, was a frequent user prior to quitting for the job search. I took a home test this morning and it came up negative. What is a "non-negative"? I have flushed for the past few days, so was wondering if a non-negative result meant diluted? Could the home test and 38 days clean be wrong?

Non-negative means the instant test (screening device) is indicating a "not negative" result.

A tester can get a negative from a screening device (instant test), but not a positive result. That means, anything out of the ordinary, (i.e.: adulterant panel color is off a bit or the line is not there or too faint to be certain), the test is labeled "non-negative" and sent to the laboratory for confirmation.
Non-negative could mean the specific gravity was off, or the pH was off, or anything. Something was abnormal with your instant test, that is why it was sent to the lab for confirmation.

Did the tester not let you see the results? I hate when they get all secretive like that. There is no reason the donor cannot be there when the results are read from the instant device.

Good luck. I personally think you have a good chance of receiving a negative on the drug panel, but the specific gravity might give you a bit of a problem if you "over hydrated".

Thanks for your reply. By abnormal, do you mean that it indicates positive for drugs of any type? Or do you mean that the metrics--like the specific gravity was off...?

With a negative on a home test, and 38 days totally clean I honestly don't know what to think!

Fortunately, the nurse told me that I should check back Wednesday and see if I need to come in and re-test Weds or Thursday. If the lab has an issue I will need to do that. I have been reading information from some drug screening sources, including the Florida Department of Transportation that "non-negative" results indicate dilution, adulteration or substitution. Wish I knew what was definitive.

If ANYTHING about the instant test is abnormal, including any of the adulterant panels or the test panel not indicating a negative, or both, the specimen is labeled "non-negative" and sent to a lab for confirmation.

Hi all,

I received a non-negative from an instant strip test (Rapid
Tox)today. As a result they are sending my urine to be tested at the lab. If it comes back ok, there isn't going to be further testing. If not, then I will need to re-test on Thursday.

So does anyone know when the MRO gets involved? Is it after the second test, if it is positive/confirming of the strip test?

By the time a second test would be administered I will have been clean for 40to 41 days. Not to mention the fact that I thought I was going to get my first test two weeks ago, and flushed for three days as a result, and I tested myself this morning following my strip test and the home test screened negative. Hoping it is just an issue of overdilution or error, but who knows? When will the MRO get involved, either way? If needed, that is...

Noone really knows till you get called back... u MIGHT have overdilution going on but you didnt say how or if you diluted.... did you follow the guide lines here for dilution? need more info.

No, I didn't follow the wise advice given here. I kind of panicked at the last minute and downed over a gallon of liquids the night/day before. Maybe that's the reason for the non-negative.

If it were non-negative indicating a possible positive for an illegal drug, i am sure they would not be telling you that you could re-test later. I am thinking that your urine indicated abnormal specific gravity readings, hence the re-test. Your company must have a policy that any negative dilute is an automatic re-test.


Next time (if there is one), don't drink so much. Your home test came up negative: Trust it.

Just go in there with confidence and pee in the cup. you should be fine without all that liquid.
