I was just taken off chemo thearpy 2 weeks ago. My doc says I am never going into remission. While I was on Chemo I smoked; about 3 times a week. Because of my disease I have hepc from a blood transfusion in 1977 when in a boat accident. Hepc will affect your joints and I have severe joint pain. So my liver doc suggested I go to my family doc and get on some kind of pain relief. So last week I did go to my family doc, when I asked for pain pills and arthrititis meds, the nurse said they will have to do a drug screen, I said what do I look like a drug addict, she said no, just new policy. Well I flunked of course and if I was in my right mind I would have dropped the piss cup in the toliet and then told them I cant pee now. However for some reason I thought I would pass since I had cut down on the pot. I dont buy it and its not around , I just dont smoke that much of it, but since it was less then 30 days it showed up. I am just wondering if this is really legal? Does everybody that asks for pain pills have to get a drug test? This is news to me. I am rehearsing over and over in my head of what I should have done, but too late. The worse part is my doc of 20 yrs came in shaking his head and making these clicking noises like tisk tisk, shame on you, I was so embarrssed. He saying so degrading I dont prescribe pain pills to people that use illegal drugs, Then I got mad.Do I have to take a poloygraphy test too, so I can start bending to aurthority. Obvisiously I switched to a new Family doc that goes in effect Jan 01, 2008. I am 56 yrs old, and now since I am in pain now I cant get pain pills when I really need them just my luck. But does anybody know if this is a new goverment policy if you ask for pain pills that you have to summit to a drug screen. Today I orderd 5 home drug testing kits, I will take one every time I go to my New doc till Im sure he isnt going to ask me for a piss test. I am a newbie, sorry for the long post. Welcome and Howdy.....first, no you do not have to take a urine screen, but in most cases this will lead to the doctor asking you to go somewhere else for treatment. It's a real catch twenty-two, your damned if you do and damned if you don't........

Also, medical marijuana is coming into the picture, so the doc's are being warned by the DEA almost constantly about prescription diversion, which became the DEA"s number 1 priority in the past couple of years........have to justify that budget some way........

But, you are a victim of the drug war now, and must suffer the consequences of your actions. I know how bad it sucks, but, as they say ........

"That's the biz, sweetheart...!" If you were a doctor, would you trade your license for one old pot-head?

what can you do, if that dactor didn't give you a medical licences than he probably doesnt support it, which means he would rather see you suffer than use something that has been proven to be less harmful than any of those pain medications you were asking for

you could have tried explaining why you used, and he still would have given you that same crap, your new doctor may or may not be leniant towards you cause of the cancer, but now that its over you would have no use for it, my doctor knows that i have used cannabis several times and continue to use cannabis, but he doesnt drug screen me if i ask for pain pills for a legitiment issue like yours

so basicaly your doctor is an ass in my mind he legaly could only ask you for a voluntary test, but if you refused than he would know, and he obviously doesnt care that you had cancer, so pretty much go with your new doctor and if he asks if you use MJ than be straight forward with him tell him you used while you had cancer but now the cancer is gone and you are going clean

a good rule is to never bullshit your doctor tell them the whole story and never lie or exagerate, in your case you werent the average teenage stoner just trying to get high you were trying to ease your suffering, if they dont agree than they shouldnt be a doctor

The OP wasn't looking for a medical marijuana recommendation. He was looking for some pain pills.

It's not a government policy, but it is being done because of the government. The DEA is cracking down on doctors for the over-prescription of controlled pain meds. One aspect of this is drug-seekers faking symptoms to get them. If you get busted for illegal drugs and they find your prescription, it would reflect badly on your doctor. He's just covering his ass.

It also sounds like your doctor is completely ignorant about the realities of marijuana and its medical uses. You should print out some positive articles about it and mail them to him.

I am horrified. Here in Europe this is absolutely unheard of. Condolences to Maggi and all those who`ve suffered due to such backward drug policies and the enforcement thereof.

Nope. In the US. doctors decide which prescription meds their patients ought to get. It's not the patient's decision.

Do European doctors give their patients anything they ask for?
