Default avoiding alcohol while cleaning out for drug test?

Why do they say not to drink alcohol when you are trying to clean out for a drug test. I have read this in several different places and have always wondered why. Does anyone know?

Oops, my bad, i thought this was offtopic.
I'm assuming you are referring to testing for marijuana seeing as how you are on a marijuana site

I believe you shouldn't drink alcohol when you're trying to clean out from cannabis because the THC can be metabolized in fat and alcohol. So if you drink while your still dirty then it's going to take longer for it to clean out of your system.

edit: btw, at first glance this looked offtopic because you didn't mention anything about marijuana or testing for such so in the future thelma you might want to be a bit more elaborate in your question as so it doesn't create a conundrum

I hope this isn't true. I was planning on drinking this weekend cause I couldn't smoke.

Edit: Well that guy just answered it, but I'm still gonna drink this weekend.

Very well put Broliette. If off topics are mentioned, they must be in the context of marijuana. Simply stating that you are wanting to get drunk and asking if the alcohol show on a drug test is off topic. Stating that you want to get drund and asking if alcohol will affect the length of time it takes for THC to dissipate from your body is on topic.

Ok I am new hear give me a break. My question is how does alcohol affect the length of time it takes for THC to leave the body? Why should you not drink alcohol while trying to clean thc from the body? Does anyone really know?

I'm not trying to give you a hard time but Broli did answer your question. You may want to read it again.

I believe it has to do with your liver. (that and your own size, metabolism, ect.)

You have a drink, smoke some weed, or even take a tylenol; it's got to go through your liver. (Look up drug metabolism) It plays a large role in detoxification. So if you smoke some marijuana and then go drink on top of it that's just going to add more time to your detox because your liver can only work so fast.

Actually, I have a little different take on this. I would like to see some of these sites for one. I'm not sure if there are any extensive scientific studies on the effects of drinking and THC metabolism and elimination rates, I'll try to check later today (I did a quick but limited search).

The first step in hepatic metabolism of THC is hydroxylation at the 11 position to 11- hydroxy-delta-9-THC then oxidation to 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC (this is also known as THC-COOH, the main metabolite of THC and the one that is used in GC/MS!). There are other metabolic steps or reactions and other metabolites but this is the main metabolic pathway and the most important one.

The first step in hepatic metabolism of alcohol is oxidation of alcohol (ethanol) to acetaldehyde catalyzed by the enzyme alcohol o dehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde is further oxidized to acetic acid by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2. Acetic acid is then converted to carbon dioxide and water through the citric acid cycle. Alcohol also undergoes a "secondary" metabolism through the cytochrome P450IIE1 (CYP2E1) enzyme pathway. About 5% of Tylenol is metabolized through CYP2E1, thus the alcohol/tylenol interaction. I will relate one that back to marijuana in just a few I promise!

So what does all this tell us about the role of drinking and the elmination time of THC metabolites through the body? The liver is a very complicated organ that can handle many tasks at once or else we would be dead. From forming blood clotting factors to metabolizing the food we eat to removing chemicals from the body to a storehouse and regulator of energy to production of albumin, your liver is one big multitasker. As far as metabolism goes for a significant interaction to occur between alcohol and THC, they must share the same or related metabolic pathway (like the alcohol/tylenol thing). While the metabolic pathways for THC and alcohol are pretty much separate and independent from each other you shouldn't forget about the role of alcohol in your attempt to get clean. Alcohol can damage the liver. If you are a heavy drinker, you may have caused damage to your liver. High levels of alcohol can put a heavy workload on the liver. So use some common sense and judgement on this. If you are trying to get clean and you have a few weeks and you have a drink or two here and there, is it really going to significantly increase how long before you test clean? I would say no not really. If you replace your bud smoking with binge drinking while trying to get clean, that wouldn't be the smartest idea in the world. If you are unhealthy to begin with and trying to get clean or you have a bad diet or you may have already pickled your liver take these things into consideration too. Moderation.
