No, the time is noted so if you are taking any medications, the MRO can ask what time you took them, and look at what time you urinated. That should tell the MRO how much approximately of the medication should be in your urine. That way, the MRO can tell if you are doubling up on your medication. Another reason the time is noted is that the donor has 3 hours to produce a specimen. If the donor has a "shy bladder", the time of the first attempt is noted, and then the form also records the time an acceptable specimen was actually produced. The collector also notes how much water the donor drank while waiting to void. From there, the MRO can determine if the donor should have been on the "slightly diluted" side or not. For example; if a donor comes in and says: "I can't pee right now, can I have some water?". We will give up to 40 ounces of water spread out evenly over a 3 hour period. That is approximately 8 ounces per half hour. If the donor drank 40 ounces in the first half hour, then gave a specimen, it would probably be diluted. The MRO can then say, that the collector was at fault for not regulating the quantity of water given to the donor. If the collector gives only 8 ounces, then the donor voids only 20 minutes later and that void is over the threshhold for dilution, then the MRO can determine that the donor deliberately attempted to adulterate his/her specimen. Stinky urine is not a criteria for failing a drug test. There is no "odormeter" set up on the specimen. If it is very smelly, the collector can make a note on the form that the urine had an unusually strong odor, then the MRO will ask leading questions. When that happens, the donor usually trips him/herself up because by no he/she is very nervous... and that is one reason for a drug test to be determined to be substituted.

So....if the sample is collected, say in the afternoon, and placed somewhere at room temperature it is bound to have an oder by the time it arrives at the lab? Also, I can't help but wonder if most of the samples a lab receives ends up stinking due to sitting around outside of a fridge?

Quest Diagnostics ilocated in Schaumberg Illinois. There are many collection facilities all over the US that collect specimens and send to the approariate laboratory. LabCorp has 4-5 laboratories located in different places in the US. Off the top of my head, I can think of two: Seattle WA and Research Triangle Park, NC. I think there is also one in San Diego CA as well. Kroll Labs is located in New Orleans LA and they recently acquired a laboratory in the Carolinas as well. Obviously people in NYC are giving specimens at a "quest facility" that will not be tested on that site, but rather sent via overnight courier to Illinois. Just because a collection facility is listed on a laboratory website as a "Quest Diagnostics" facility, doesn't mean that Quest owns that facility. I have contracts with all the major laboratories and other national Third Party Providers, however; I am independently owned. I collect and send to Quest, LabCorp, MedTox, Kroll, ATN, CRL, ... just to name a few. The laboratory is located elsewhere. Sometimes, like in the instance of an eScreen test (WalMart, Sears, Checkers, etc.) the test is performed using an instant device and the results are electronically transmitted to the laboratory (CRL). If the results indicate a non-negative reading, the collector is instructed to forward that specimen to the lab. This type of pre-employment testing is becoming more and more prevalent, but for the most part, the specimens are still being collected at clinics and facilities all over the US and forwarded to a lab for testing. Department of Transportation regulated testing (for truck drivers, pilots, flight crew & mechanics, RR conductors and engineers, flammable and/or pressurized pipeline workers, Bus drivers & dispatchers) the specimens cannot be tested on site, but MUST be tested at a Dept of Health & Human Services Certified Laboratory.
