the vapor genie!? - Page 2

I've been using the VaporGenie for about a month now and the Iolite for a couple of days. This is what I posted earlier about the VaporGenie:

I was really hoping that the VaporGenie would be the answer to the age-old of conundrum of vaporizing on the trail. I mean, you have to bring a lighter anyway, so why not use it to get high? But unless your buddies are willing to take frequent time-outs while you shelter behind a rock, it's just not that practical. Sigh, I guess I'll have to shell out $250 and try the Iolite.

I got an Iolite on eBay for $200 plus shipping. It also hits quite weakly, but it's much easier to use. You can use it in windy conditions, in public, at concerts, on the trail, pretty much anywhere. I don't think my VaporGenie will be seeing much more use.

You can actually get some really good hits from the io, but it is inconsistent. Effect is what counts though, and it delivers there, and in a stealthy manner.

I've heard the vapor from the vaporgenie is not as clean as most other vaporizers, but for the price of a nice pipe, might as well try it.

It's clean if you make sure not to burn. With practice you will never burn.

It smells less than my VaporWarez too.

More importantly, I can heat it up to the point where I can toast finely grinded bud in three hits.

If you use the VaporGenie the way they tell you to in the manual and their website, you should not get any strange odors, flavors, or residues. You're supposed to inhale gently so that the flame of your lighter does NOT touch the ceramic filter. If you draw too hard and the flame gets sucked into the bowl, the filter will turn black and it will taste like gas. The thing is, it takes a long time and a lot of hits to get high if you use the thing correctly, so you're always tempted to put more of the flame into the bowl. Anyway that was my experience with it, and from what I've read I think other people may also have used it incorrectly.

Not necessarily. How long is "long"? How many are "a lot"? And how can one person determine when another reaches a "high"? I've gotten quite high from a couple of Genie hits and I wouldn't say I was using it incorrectly.

If your ceramic filter has stains or you taste gas, you are using it incorrectly (or at least in a way that is different from what the manufacturer recommends). It isn't easy to use correctly. Even if you're being careful, your flame will go into the bowl at least sometimes. I would guess that most people who say the VaporGenie hits hard have done this and breathed in quite a bit of soot.

N.B.: My comments reflect my personal experience only. IMO sharing your subjective experiences is the whole point of this forum, and everyone's observations are valid even if they aren't as fussy about semantics and definitions as some people. So if anyone has a problem with subjective posts that don't define their terms, I would say they need to look at their own posts first. Cheers!

Any stains on the ceramic would be soot. You're going to get at least a little soot on the filter from time to time, unless you're using a torch lighter. A torch lighter can actually be used to remove the soot.

As far as tasting butane, if you have a flame, then the only thing you could be tasting is unburned carbon-the same soot that gets on the filter.

While it is possible to use the Genie without getting any soot on the filter, your experience of getting weak hits is the result.
