| Hey all, So, completely outraged at the over-priced vaporizers on the market I have decided to do my best to come up with cheap DIY versions of vaporizer styles that I like. This first one is based on the lighter heated type - like the VaporStar or the VaporGenie. There are differences between this and those - please don't misunderstand me. But let's say you don't have $43.87USD for a VaporStar but you do have the bong you would need to go with it and still want to vape vs smoke. Here is what you do: 1. Insert a 3/4 inch screen into the bong stem and place your herb on it. 2. Insert the stem into the bong and insert the bowl as normal 3. Fire the bowl with your lighter as if there were herb in it. It should not be possible to suck the flame all the way down to your herb but be carefull - just in case. You don't want to blacken the herb. Take a constant inhale. 4. Watch as your bong fills with vapor. Adjust the heat by moving the flame closer and farther away. With a little practice you can get really good vapor hits this way. I started out using water in the bong but eventually got good enough to do it dry. The risk being, of course, that if you burn the herb with a dry bong you will blacken the glass. yechh. You might want to start with some water. Remember to hold the bowl by the handle as it might be hot! Whether home-made or not, the main thing is to try out vaporizing vs smoking. There are many styles of vaporizers out there and one of them should be right for you. I made a little picture that shows where the screen goes but I couldn't get it to upload. Hopefully you can figure it out by my description. I will try again later with the pic. |

| I have no problem paying what I paid for my vaporizer. It works just fine, is easy to use, and has yet to disappoint me. I have yet to see an actual homemade vape that can begin to compare. No special skills are necessary, and 99.99999999% of the time, I can avoid burning or cumbusting the herb. I honestly belive I've already saved enough in herb to pay for my vaporizer multiple times. if it needed to be replaced tomorrow, I'd replace it without a second thought (if it couldn't be repaired). Once you use a REAL vape, nothing else will do

| The DIY jobs are better than smoking IMO. The fact that it's hard to get good results can serve to show how much better vapor hits are vs. smoke. Get a good vapor hit from one, then burn it the next hit and get a big dose of smoke. The contrast between a smooth hit of vapor and a nasty lungful of smoke should be enough to sell a lot of people on the concept of vaping. And the inconsistent results would hopefully prompt them to buy a real vaporizer.

| Well . .it's true that the results from the above method are a little inconsistant but not much moreso than my VaporGenie (I dont have a VaporStar). I had to practice to learn the Genie and I still occasionally overcook the herb in the Genie. What the above version really needs is a ceramic heatsink that you can drop on top of the herb. That would help keep the temps up and stable. I'm sure you can buy one for a few dollars but I don't have one and probably won't get one to try out. To me . .all lighter vapes are a pain. Again . .I only have the VaporGenie but I think the concept is the same. You use up a lot of lighters, they get hot, you tend to overcook the herb. Again . .I am not trying to say that nobody should buy a commercial vaporizer. I do think they are all overpriced and I don't think you need anything fancy to vaporize a little herb. I also don't think anybody should do the "lightbulb" method since there are other easier and better DIY vapes. I also think I am a good person to do these little experiments because I am not handy and I don't like building things - so you can be sure you won't need any special skills or tools to pull these off. I also own the following for comparison purposes: 1. VaporGenie 2. Vapor Bros 3. Steinel Heat Gun - my favorite! 4. Volcano (my house-mates, actually). This DIY is a take on the VaporGenie (not portable, though) and I think it works about 75% as well as the VaporGenie as far as getting good hits out of it. The glass does hold the temp but something like a ceramic button would hold it better. If I find something that is commonly available, cheap and safe to use as a heatsink then I will update this thread. Or if anybody else has an idea - let me know! I think the right person to try the above method is somebody who is on the fence about vaping . . .doesn't want to spend the money without first trying vapor out. You should be able to get enough vapor out of this method to convince you that you need to get a vape. In my opinion - you need an electric vape to do any serious vaping (vapor bros, heat gun, volcano, etc) . .but I stress that is only my opinion. Anyway - if anybody tries it out let me know how it works for you. Oh yeah - here is the pic. |

| When you get a real vaporizer, you almost make it like a hobby.

| Another way to do this, if you have any metal bowl pieces laying around.. ![]() ![]() ![]() Works pretty well, just gotta get by a little learning curve. The piece of rubber is a pencil grip, I use it as a seal.

| That is a really cool homemade vape. I have a friend that is interested in the pipe style vaporizers and this may help give him an idea of what they are like. Since you have to hold the lighter on them so long to get it hot enough, isn't that kind of dangerous? I have always heard that if you hold a lighter too long they can explode from getting too hot. As a matter of fact I remeber when I was a kid we put a rubberband on one and it did eventually blow up. P.S the bong idea will be tried this weekend just for shits. I'll let you know what i think. |

| Yeah, I've heard that lighters can explode, too, but have never experienced it.. I probably hold the flame for 10 seconds max each hit, so I'm not really worried about it. The metal piece does it kind of hot though, so I let it cool down after 3 or so hits. It works pretty well, but then again, I don't have anything else to compare it to, other than a lightbulb vape and for me, it's much more effective, because much like a whip, you control the airflow. |

| Ok so somehow with a few minor adjustments I easily turned my old metal pipe into a vaporizer. This seemed way too easy but I just tried it and it worked pretty good. I had to be real careful not to burn it but I still can't believe this worked. Thanks for the idea. It didn't work near as well as my warez though and I probably won't ever use it but still it worked. ![]() Here are some pics |
