| I'm cheering in my bloomin' seat on that note. While I personally won't drive stoned, due to the potential ramifications, I really think this was a little wake up call for the zero tolerance people. I find it very cool how well they did the tests, and I'm even happier at the conclusion. While I still don't think inexperienced drivers should smoke a fat one before leaving, I don't see the problem with a closed course joint ![]() I wonder what the zero tolerance people have to say about this....? |

| WHOO!! I literally JUST got back from my sophomore class's driving convention a few minutes ago, and our drug and alcohol couselor said that kids literally some up to her and say that they drive better stoned. She said that in some situations it could be true (hint hint), but in situations that require the driver to focus on all regions of the road (in front, on sides, and behind), it is dangerous because when you are stoned you cannot divert attention, which is pretty much true (i think). The video didnt explore the aspect of driving on freeways, where you have to be constantly checking mirrors. Studies were done that showed drivers were conciencious of their spatial/time impairments and conpensated appropriatly, but checked the mirrors only once while a striaght driver checked about 16 times (of course thats probably based on an ideal driver, following ALL traffic rules which is fairly unrealistic). So maybe certain situations are different fr stoned driving. Opinions/experiences?

| I've driven over 700k miles, probably 90% of them high. I think my car insurance company must be ok with it as I get the lowest rates available. Now, there really are two distinct classes of stoned drivers, neophytes and acclimated. The neophyte can be a true menace on the roadway. I just don't get that high anymore, unless I eat a bunch of cookies. When I am that toasty I just don't want to go out driving. IMO it's self regulating for the acclimated. I honestly don't even think about it anymore. Of course the above is a major roadblock, as an identical blood concentration of THC in the neophyte produces an impaired driver, the acclimated user is perfectly competent. Alcohol is a very poor benchmark, there really isn't the same loss of motor coordination with cannabis. I've never had to close one eye in order to be able to walk to a destination even as a neophyte. I'm actually so confident in my driving ability that I won't even argue with the prohibitionists if they want to make it a class A felony. Catch me if you can. Well, you always have to give something up in a negotiation, and it's always better if it's something you really don't care about. |

| I have clocked countless miles and hours of stoned driving and driving while smoking. I do not think it impairs the ability to drive for an experienced smoker in any way shape or form. Such as was said just above the novice, or neophyte, smoker might be distracted as they are unfamiliar with being high but marijuana in no way what so ever actually physically impairs your motor skills as does alcohol. The same problem could arise from a young adult getting a brand new car stereo installed. Being so new to the neophyte pimped stereo owner you could easily let yourself get distracted with the new buttons and lights to play with. You will also never have a black out from smoking such as with alcohol. The only thing that you need to do to play it safe is make sure you have the bowl loaded before you start your trip or that you have some one else there to load it up. I don't even look at the bowl with anything other than my peripheral (sp?) vision so my eyes don't even leave the road one time more than they would otherwise. I don't advocate smoking while driving unless you understand all the legal risks of course. It's your risk to take so make sure you know all the probable chances of all the possible pros and cons before deciding what you think is the right decision for you. My main point is just that it physically is not an issue what so ever, just legally since the man is still down on the stuff.

| I wish that people on both sides of the issue would be more realistic about it. Zero tolerance is a stupid prohibitionist scam. If we're going to go "zero" then if you test 0.001% blood alcohol you should get a DUI. Obviously you don't. The 0.08% blood alcohol level (or whatever it is in your state) used to determine whether a person is impaired on alcohol is an attempt to quantify something that correlates with a level of impairment. On the other side, people who declare that it's OK to drive stoned or even that people drive better when they're stoned are equally stupid. The effects of any mind-altering substance are dosage related. It's probably safe to drive when you're a little bit high, just as it's safe to drive when you've had a beer or two. On the other hand, it's quite possible to smoke yourself unconscious. It's obviously not safe to drive when you're that high or even anywhere close to that high. While there is nothing they can do to quantify how stoned a driver is, like a blood alcohol test, a field sobriety test can easily determine if a person is too impaired to drive. That should be the standard, not zero tolerance. I'm as big a fan of the herb as the next guy and I devote a good portion of my time to getting it legalized so that 800,000 of my brothers and sisters don't get busted every year. When I think of the message that this video sends to to non-smoking public I cringe. It reinforces the "stupid stoner" image that contributes to two-thirds of the public being against the legalization of marijuana.
