I think adhesion to the pipestem and bowl is a main factor and if all devices are not the same surface area it would make sense that the ratios vary allot. I generally think less surface area less adhesion to the pipestem and bowl and therefore more thc and tar. Maybe thc sticks to the pipestem and bowl more then tar?

When it comes to practical use, the only way a joint can be more efficient than a bong is if someone constantly inhaled a whole joint from start to finish.

To me, the amount of THC filtered out in bong water is insignificant.

I would be interested to know whether water temperature affects the amount of THC filtered. Does anyone know? Educated guess?

Waterbongs are used to filter out the "harshness" of the smoke and make it easier to hit, everyone knows this. And when the water does that, I see no reason why it wouldnt take some THC out, thats why drinking bongwater(though disgusting) can make you a lot higher. Im wondering though, there has been a lot of threads on heat activation of THC, maybe water temp. does have something to do with it,hotter water might be better because the heat activating THC?

Question here regarding this thread:

I heard from a friend that the smoke that settles in the chamber of the bong before is inhaled has actually more THC in it, despite the fact that some was filtered out through the water.

This is because some THC is going to be filtered out with the bong water, but also there will be more of the non-psychoactive ingridients (like ash/tar) filtered out, and thus the smoke has a higher THC concentration nonetheless.

Seems pretty plausible to me, what do you all think?

If I am not mistaken wouldn't you be burning the plant material before it ever goes through the water? I mean if you used hot water it would never be hotter then the flame to combust the material. So by using hot water you are just keeping the smoke from cooling.

According to the RooR cooperation, their extra chamber product's recommended use is with hot water. Apparently the hot water will, as said, further activate the THC before it's long journey through the cold water in your second chamber. If you were to fill a single chamber bong with hot water, you would most likely get a stronger hit (just hearsay, but it seems logical) but the hit would be as hot as a joint, which takes away from the luxury of a water pipe.

Hot water would filter out more substances, though. Most things (except gases and a few other substances) are more soluble in water at higher temperatures.

THC doesn't need to be activated to get you high. This popular myth stems from the fact that when you eat weed you need to cook it into a fat or oil so it can be absorbed into your bloodstream.

I know some people who put ice in the bong-water, and sopposedly it makes it alot better, so I think cold water increases THC concentration . Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to try this out for myself.

The cold/ice water is to cool the smoke down because weed burns at a much higher Temp than other plants (eg:Tobacco). so the hit is not so hot you get a smoother less harsh on hit on your throat & lungs.
