I bought a new glass bong today. A pretty nice one, I'd say. It's about 1 1/2 feet tall and shaped similar to a large vase. But, the problem is that after ripping the first bowl, I found it to be very harsh (partially because of harsh weed and a huge rip) and have a taste that wasn't much like weed. Smelling the bowl itself, it has an oder comparable to paint (which could possibly be the problem) or gasoline.

What's wrong with my bong?

It could be that 'new bong smell'.
I'd suggest cleaning up the glass slide and taking a picture to share so we can see the new bong and bowl in question.

Are the designs painted on?
Thats the only explanation I could think of, as glass is blown as a much higher temperature than any lighter could produce.

I had something similar happen to me when I bough a new glass pipe. However, it did not have a chemical like taste, it was just a dull paint like taste. But after a few smoking/cleaning sessions it had no taste whatsoever. I would clean everything out just to make sure your not smoking anything overly harmfull, and if the taste does not go away, go and talk to the headshop where you bought it from and take it up with them (making sure to be completely poite about it though).

It could be a number of things accumulated in the bong whilst it sat in storage and in the headshop.

Thats why it's always a good idea to rinse out your glass before initially smoking out of it.

I cleaned the bowl with some soap and water, let dry, then used cotton swabs soaked in alcohol to clean it further. It smells more normal now. I'll probably try hitting it again tomorrow to see if it seems normal.

put that bitch in a bag full of isopropal alchohol (70% or higher is preferable) and salt and shake it for 5 mins then rinse in water, should be like new....err...cleaner than new haha.

Do you have pets? If so make sure you clean the spot you break the weed down on before you load the bowl. I do this all the time because my dogs get hair everywhere. Hair in your weed is not good at all and has the worst aftertaste.

if you still get this after smoking next time, use some vinegar/salt water and let it sit in the bong for a couple minutes before pouring it out.
