So one of my friends has a plastic bong and a glass slide...and we got to thinking.

Is there any advantage to having a glass bong? Don't worry about the slide, just the bong. My friend doesn't think that the bong material should have any effect on how the hit "feels". The slide probably will affect it, but by the time it hits the bong, what effect would the bong material have?

I'm looking for informed answers...not just the typical opinion that glass is way better than plastic.

I don't think the tase feel of the hit would be any different if you are using a glass stem. In fact, seeing as how me and my friends are quite clumsy that sounds even better.

I must say the only reason I prefer a glass peice to a plastic or acrylic peice is the feel on my mouth as I take that HUGE hit. Glass just takes the cake for feel.... it really cant be beat. In my opinon it also somewhat cools the smoke, or adds this lovely flavor to it. I dunno I just love it. Glass all the way.

i think that glass tastes better then plastic. When i take a hit from an acrylic bong i can somewhat taste the plastic and it masks the weed taste moreso than a glass bong. it shouldnt really effect the potency of the hits or how big of a hit you can take. I used to sit on my friends couch and take acrylic bong rips all day. The only disadvantage of plastic bongs is that some of them have a shotgun and dont use slide action, but other than taste and aesthetics a nice acrylic bong is just as good as a glass bong (with the exception of roors and other super nice bongs)

I would just assume the plastic being so porous would probably hold a smell, so would need replaced after awhile.

The coolness of glass (temperature ) was pointed out, just up the thread. 100% true.
Technically, acrylic isn't worse or better for the quality or amount of smoke you can get out of it.
It's like drinking fine Wine out of a solo cup, or expensive Crystal.
Technically, it shouldn't taste any different, but it does.

You could nitpick the glass vs plastic bongs, but I think if you have to ask you'd never know the difference. The only reason I'd prefer a glass bong is because I love the glass artwork.

I agree with Juank....i love the ARTWORK.....if your clumsy or just dont have the money then go with whatever you got........trust me ive smoked out of my fair share of coke can bowls and 2 liter bottle gravs
