I was wondering what the real difference is between a bong and a water pipe. grasscity.com says "A bong seems similar to a water pipe but the feeling you get from it is different. With a water pipe one slowly draws the smoke through a hose and water. Using a bong the smoke will pass the water very quickly and shoots right up into your lungs. You'll feel it right away, where the effect of a water pipe is more relaxed." They have a page showing what a water pipe is and what a bong is but i don't see much difference in how they work or why one has one effect and the other has another.

| Bongs tend to be a little bigger. They hold more water and more smoke, so you have to suck a little harder to get a lot of smoke up. Water pipes are small, almost hand-held, they're just like regular pipes but have water in them, e.g. a bubbler would be a water pipe. Bongs and water pipes both have water, but bongs don't have a carb on them (instead they have a downstem and a slide or bowl), unlike a water pipe which has a carb and a builtin bowl.

Thanks, a few more questions I just thought of. You mentioned bubbler which I've heard before. Is a bubbler the exact same thing as a water pipe, just different name? Also I've read enough on here to know that the question of loosing THC doesn't really have an answer but, with shape and water what is suggested? IE-Long and narrow tube of water to move up though, or should it be a wide amount? Does more water help and should I have a lot of surface area on the top? Stuff like that I'm curious about.

the water pipe you mention above, with a hose and all, sounds more like a hooka. this is like a bigger version of a bong, but with a hose, so you dont clear it or anything. its like smoking a water-filtered joint.

Speaking of water filtered joints, the reason I asked about water dimensions for a bong, I made a bong out of one of those Giant Eagle gallon juice containers. The ones with the sides waved a little and the carrier handle on the top. I made tubbing from 2 pens and stuck it though one of the waves so it angles down to the bottom in the middle and made a choke hole and stuff. To use it I just put a joint in the pen cap sticking out and smoke it like that instead of making a bowl for it. It took me about 5 minutes to make and is almost completely airtight except for one little pinprick where the hole has a notch in it. I was explaining this because I was curious about water dimensions and also when you mentioned a water filtered joint I also wondered if anyone else made bongs that used a joint instead of a bowl cuz I've never heard of it before, it's just how the ones I've made turned out.

there are actually joint adapters for bongs, so yea, its a pretty reasonable idea. tough when you think about it, you're still smoking the paper with it, where you could just put it in a bowl and not have any paper smoke.

Yeah, I thought the whole purpose of using a water bong was to filter out the tars in the smoke to create a smoother, cleaner draw. I don't see why smoking a joint out of a bong or pipe makes any sense fundamentally. But, that's just me. It only costs less than 10 bucks to go down to the hardware store and pick up some cool piping, hoses, and sealing material. It comes out a lot nicer and I believe the bong holds together longer, in comparison to pen tubes and such. The coolness points go up too when bustin' it out in front of friends Anyway, in regards to water dimension, it's been my experience that a moderately slender bottle about 16in-20in in circumference is ideal. For height, I normally fill up my bong to about 6-7 inches in water. Hope that makes sense. If you find a wide bottle, that's cool too, but to me that just requires more water which doesn't filter or cool the smoke all that much more. I always use hoses to extend the length of my homemade bongs for extra travel time to cool the smoke. Hoses cost like 40 cents a foot. The bowl and stem which I chose costed like 4 dollars (3 peices altogether), The peanut butter jar I used was free, and the clear automotive grade silicone used to seal up drill holes was like 4 dollars. It took under 20 minutes for assembly and it works great!
