I didn't mean for y'all to assume that there is no water in the bottom. I am talking about when there is water in the bottom, with ice cubes stacked all the way up. The smoke passes over ice after being filtered by the water. It sounds like no one has heard of this crystalization process my friend was referring to... I'll keep looking and let you know if I find anything... Thanks for your comments, except for the person who said it was a stupid question - I hope you get lung cancer!

Phish, theres nothing wrong or even more hazardous about smoking with ice in your bong. Unless your using dry ice, HAHA. You are actually easing the stress on your throat by controlling the exposure of those tissues to the heat from your burn. Now, if your asthematic, and why would you be smoking anyway, extreme cold can stimulate an asthematic attack. You are fine. Keep your bowl full and forget the BS.

Hi I'm going in alone on this one I see but I gonna say yes it is alittle more harmful to use ice.(Granted this information is coming from my own experiences.) Now let us sit back in our chair and take a good look at this. Smoke is a form of air correct? Yes. Ok well what happens to air when it gets cold? Don't well throw a pumped up balloon outside on a really cold night. A 35 degree night would work but aside from that take a look at the balloon in the morning what happened to the balloon. Oh look it got smaller as it seems to have leaked air right? WRONG!!!! Air as in oxygen Condenses in the cold. Yes believe it or not oxygen(Air) shrinkes in the cold because the air molecules slow down causing the atoms to draw closer to each other. So back to the original problem. Smoke is a form of oxygen correct? Right. Well if you put ice in the bong water or no water what happens? The smoke does the same thing as air it contracts. Hence the larger hits you can take. But what happens to the smoke when it enters your lungs. Of course your lungs are 98.6 degrees cause the smoke which is about 42 degrees give or take a few degrees to increase in temperature rapidly. So what happens to the smoke when it increases rapidly well remember the balloon. Well take it and toss it in the oven at about 100 degrees what happens to the balloon? Oh look it swelled back up and the balloon streched out. Well the same thing happens to the smoke it gets in your lungs and expands like the balloon and stretches your lungs. It'd be like putting 10 Lbs. of **** in a 5 Lbs. bag. But thats my take on the subject as for the crystallization yeah thats sounds like some B.S. thanx for reading as I rambled on but I'm high so it's all good. Peace

I'm not convinced. We already knew weed smoke expands your lungs, thats a given. You can breathe in deeper that way.

Well, let's see. With ice, the hits are smoother and cooler, therefore less irritating on your throat and chest.

However, when the waters hot, the smoke is better filtered and water vapor is in theory added to the smoke making it a little more soothing.

So...

Buy a double or triple perk bong, fill the bottom perk with warm water and the top one/two with cold water and crushed ice to the top... Superior filtration of the chemicals since hot water does it better than cold, water vapor added into the mix, and than everything cooled way down with ice and filtered a second/third time... You can't beat that!

Of course, this is all theory. Don't take any of this as absolute fact, I could potentially be wrong...

I was wondering about other solutions to put in a bong besides water. Water filters smoking, takes away some THC, and some of the bad stuff. Is there a thicker liquid i could put in the bong to make smaller bubbles and maybe filter it more? or even with chemicals make a liquid that could possibly repel THC, and attract tar and other chemicals. I know a vaporizer would solve this problem, but i think it would be interesting to figure something liek this out. You know the cigarette filters you can buy with the crystals that absorb some tar? could the chemical in those be liquidated and mixed with something that could be put into a bong?
