Well so I know its a stupid question, but I'm interested because Ive only smoked once from one, how a water bong works and how you're supposed to take hits off it. Anyone?

ok first off how it works, i dunno if you want the technical version or not but your gonna get it :-) Ok, you put your mou th on the big end and suck in. This makes a vacuum and since the only place air can get through is the bowl it sucks smoke through. It bubbles the smoke through the water which cools and filters it, making it less harsh on your lungs and letting you take MUCH bigger hits (try putting ice in it too) Ok.....so you put your mouth on the mo uth piece and inhale till the chamber is real thick with smoke, then either uncover the choke or pull the bowl out depending on what kind of bong you got and all that smokey goodness rushes down into your lungs, TRY NOT TO COUGH becuase holding all that smoke in your lungs delivers a nice healthy dose of THC. Does that explain it?

You hit the mouthpiece of the bong by inhaling. This lowers the pressure in the chamber, which causes air to come into it. The air comes through the stem, which holds the bowl, which you should have put some flame up to. This causes the smoke to fill the chamber. If your bong has a carb, you need to cover it with a finger before trying to fill the chamber with smoke.

Once you're satisfied with the amount of smoke in the chamber, there are a couple of options, depending on the bong. On bongs that don't have a carb, you pull the bowl and keep inhaling. If it has a carb, take your finger off of it. Keep inhaling and your lungs will be filled with delicious smoke.

Repeat ad nauseam.

Actually me and my friends had a saying "you coughed youre high" becuase we noticed once you hack up a lung you get blasted. It turns out there is actual scientific merit to that, when you cough your lungs expans and allow the smoke into the blood vessels better (or something like that) so cough your lungs out its good for you!

I wouldn't quite say "good" for you, but it does seem to get you higher. Getting smoke of any kind deep into your lungs isn't "good" for you.

coughing is actually more healthy than not coughing. it exposes more cells to the smoke, but coughing is also a bodily reaction to expel particles from your lungs.
