A bong is a type of water pipe. Period. Whether you actually put water in it is incidental.

Personally, I find the whole "water cools the smoke" claim dubious. For me, the real benefits of a bong are the following:

A large chamber to hold smoke. Fire it up, draw smoke into the chamber, cover the mouthpiece with your hand, take a few breaths, and then shotgun the smoke from the chamber.

Ash catcher. The water traps ash and particles, but still lets through potent concentrations of smoke.

Cools the smoke. But not because of the water. I think this has more to do with the distance from the bowl to your lungs and the fact that if hit properly the smoke is pre-cached in the chamber. With smaller pipes and joints, the flame is only a few linear inches from your mouth and has to be sucked directly into your lungs.

So what I like to do is put just enough water in the bong to cover the bottom of the stem. If you put in too much water, you reduce the volume of the chamber and consequently the amount of smoke you can suck down in a single hit. If you don't put in any water, you lose some of the pipe's effectiveness as an ash catcher.

Like others have said, the most important thing to do is experiment and figure out what you like best.

the only time i ever dry hitted a bong it was out of neccesity. Me and some friends were smoking ontop of this sick lookout spot by a water tower with an acrylic bong that someone brought. We only had a little water so we dumped it all in the bong (well worth sacrificing cotton mouth later in my opinion). then we got a call from a bud who said there was a cop parked down athe base of the mountain so we bolted. Someone dumped the bong and hid it. When we decided we were pretty safe i decided to go hunt for the bong. I found it but alas had no water. We ended up dry hitting and it was beastly. Big hits and pretty smooth surprisingly. Not as bad as you would think, its just a huge as pipe.

I love how these old threads pop up randomly. I actually read every post.

I personally use chocolate milk in my bong, and add a little nutmeg, because I think it makes the smoke more potent, and it tastes like barf (which I like).

I suppose if it didn't have any liquid in it, it would still be a bong (at least that's what the judge would call it). I won't get into how a large intake surface area "necked down", would allow for greater air exchange with, or without water.

I think bongs without water are for one-eyed, peg-legged, no good, low down, dirty, lying, demon-gypsies.

Anyone who disagrees is officially on notice.

The only substances I have ever ripped out of a dry bong are off topic, and this was due to their water solubility. Contrary to what most of said here, I believe a wet bong will deliver bigger hits than a dry bong, because the water makes it milk much thicker. Give me a second to do an experiment....

Ok, I'm back. I just smoked two bowls out of my bong, 1 dry and 1 wet. On the wet run, I snapped the bowl as usual and enjoyed the nice, cool, thick smoke. Dry run comes and not only did I only smoke a little over half of the bowl, but I almost died coughing.

Wet bong:1; Dry bong:0
