Can you guys clear something up for me.


I have a 6" blue straight up plastic Bong with a metal bowl.


Don't you need a certain type of bowl before you put water in there?

i thought bongs with the slider piece and no "thumb hole" are the ones made for water.

So you can use any bong with water? or you still need that slider piece?

Sure. I'm new here, but not new to smokin. :-)

Do what? Nah, the metal bowl is fine. But, er, make sure you pour the water through the mouthpiece, not through the bowl. :-)

A bong is a type of water pipe. Period. Whether you actually put water in it is incidental.

Personally, I find the whole "water cools the smoke" claim dubious. For me, the real benefits of a bong are the following:

1. A large chamber to hold smoke. Fire it up, draw smoke into the chamber, cover the mouthpiece with your hand, take a few breaths, and then shotgun the smoke from the chamber.

2. Ash catcher. The water traps ash and particles, but still lets through potent concentrations of smoke.

3. Cools the smoke. But not because of the water. I think this has more to do with the distance from the bowl to your lungs and the fact that if hit properly the smoke is pre-cached in the chamber. With smaller pipes and joints, the flame is only a few linear inches from your mouth and has to be sucked directly into your lungs.

So what I like to do is put just enough water in the bong to cover the bottom of the stem. If you put in too much water, you reduce the volume of the chamber and consequently the amount of smoke you can suck down in a single hit. If you don't put in any water, you lose some of the pipe's effectiveness as an ash catcher.

Like others have said, the most important thing to do is experiment and figure out what you like best.

When I was a kid we used to make steam rollers out of toilet paper tubes.

1. Cut a nickel-size hole in the side of the tube about a half-inch from one end.
   _
2. Wrap a layer or two of aluminum foil around the end of the tube (the end with the hole in it). Don't cover the big opening, just the little one you cut yourself.

3. Use a stickpin to poke a tight group of tiny holes in the aluminum foil right over the nickel-sized hole you just cut out of the tube (and subsequently covered with foil). This will be the steamroller's bowl.

To smoke it:

1. Put a small amount of weed on the steamroller's bowl.
2. Put your palm over the end of the tube with the bowl on top.
3. Make a seal with your mouth on the other end.
4. Use your free hand to flame the bowl.
5. Inhale slowly until the cherry in the bowl goes out.
6. Leaving your mouth on the tube, take your hand from the other end and inhale deeply to shotgun the smoke.

It'd probably be a lot more effective if you started with something bigger, like say a paper towel tube. I dunno. I'ts been a loooong time since I've seen a homemade jank like that. :-)

the only time i ever dry hitted a bong it was out of neccesity. Me and some friends were smoking ontop of this sick lookout spot by a water tower with an acrylic bong that someone brought. We only had a little water so we dumped it all in the bong (well worth sacrificing cotton mouth later in my opinion). then we got a call from a bud who said there was a cop parked down athe base of the mountain so we bolted. Someone dumped the bong and hid it. When we decided we were pretty safe i decided to go hunt for the bong. I found it but alas had no water. We ended up dry hitting and it was beastly. Big hits and pretty smooth surprisingly. Not as bad as you would think, its just a huge as pipe.
