I use acetone to clean my glass pieces, get all the resin out and have it taste and hit like new again. My new bong has a rubber/plastic seal around the downtube - is there any chance that acetone can erode/damage the rubber or plastic? I've never heard of it, but has anyone have any experience with this? It would just to clean my bong out only to find that the acetone damaged the seal, and it's no longer air tight.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Acetone will dissolve certain kinds of plastics and rubber. Acetone is overkill for cleaning pipes, anyway. Use rubbing alcohol (70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol) which won't melt your piece.

I'd recommend against acetone as a solvent for cleaning pipes. You're better off using
ethyl alcohol (in some places you can get 190 proof everclear) or isopropanol. Also
make sure you dry the piece before smoking from it, all three solvents can be harmful
if inhaled.

...I used to fill it with hot water, and add a handful of rice. Then plug up all the holes and shake vigorously. The rice does a nice job of scraping gunk off the glass when you're outta alkeyhol.

Just make sure that during the rinse you get all the rice out. It likes to hide!

I'm curious. Why would anyone use expensive drinking alcohol (Everclear) when cheap rubbing alcohol does just as good a job? It's not like you're going to be ingesting either one.
