Michigan State Basketball Player Admitted to Smoking Weed to the Police

As previously reported, Michigan State basketball player Derrick Nix got into some recent legal trouble when he was pulled over and cited for operating a motor vehicle in the presence of drugs, as well as marijuana possession. Now, details are surfacing that shed more light onto what happened that night on April 3rd.

Nix tested positive for having consumed marijuana and possessed a rather small amount of weed, weighing in at just over half a gram. But, while Nix’s positive test could have stemmed from prior use, the 6’9” forward’s forthrightness may have got him into more trouble with the police, as the current charges again him now include operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance. Luckily for Nix, this charge is also just a misdemeanor in Michigan.

According to The Detroit News via a police report, the details of the Nix arrest are as follows:

“Nix was pulled over at 12:20 a.m. on April 3 after running a red light while turning from Lake Lansing Road northbound onto Abbot Road in a 2011 red Dodge Charger. The report says the officer smelled the odor of marijuana, Nix had bloodshot eyes and that he stated he had smoked prior to the stop at around 10 p.m.

He then failed several field sobriety tests, including two balance tests and one that required him to count forward and backward. Nix then agreed to submit to a blood draw and also told officers he had a ‘blunt’ in the visor of the car. The report said he tested positive for marijuana and the officer retrieved the blunt that contained 0.6 grams of the controlled substance.

After the blood test at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Nix was returned to the East Lansing jail and was released later that day on $200 bond. Nix waived his arraignment last week and must appear for a pre-trial hearing at 54-B District Court at an undetermined date.”

While the maximum jail time for the young player if convicted is just 93 days, Nix has also been suspended indefinitely by Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, who notes that Nix’s future with the program, where he just finished his junior season, may be in jeopardy.

Is Tom Izzo overreacting to such a minor offense? Is Nix an idiot for admitting to cops to being high? Is Derrick Nix’s college basketball career over?

Since blood flows throughout the body, acting as a medium for providing oxygen and nutrients, and drawing waste products back to the excretory systems for disposal, the state of the bloodstream affects, or is affected by, many medical conditions. For these reasons, blood tests are the most commonly performed medical tests..^”‘
