President Obama Speaks on Medical Marijuana Raids

7

In a new cover story for Rolling Stone, President Obama spoke about the recent string of raids on medical marijuana facilities, including the recent raid on Oaksterdam, that seems to negate his previous comments on the subject while running for office in 2008. As you may remember, President Obama was quoted as saying “I’m not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws [on medical marijuana].”

Obama offered the following comments to clarify his position as he begins his campaign for a second term this year:

“What I specifically said was that we were not going to prioritize prosecutions of persons who are using medical marijuana. I never made a commitment that somehow we were going to give carte blanche to large-scale producers and operators of marijuana — and the reason is, because it’s against federal law.

I can’t nullify congressional law. I can’t ask the Justice Department to say, ‘Ignore completely a federal law that’s on the books.’ What I can say is, ‘Use your prosecutorial discretion and properly prioritize your resources to go after things that are really doing folks damage.’ As a consequence, there haven’t been prosecutions of users of marijuana for medical purposes.

The Huffington Post points out that while Obama seems to believe that his actions are not conflicting with prior statements, lawmakers in five states disagree and have written letters calling out the president’s contradiction with his previous statements and their states’ rights to run their own medical marijuana program.

Is President Obama to blame for the recent crackdown on medical marijuana?

  1. Marijuana need to be looked at by the government and change the laws on it. For one they can use money made from it to help school and even the law to crack down on the really problems such as crack meth and other things that the younger generations are getting hooked on and to try to tell me that these are not real problems please I bet you if you locked down just on base joint base Lewis mccord and ua all the people on the base you find people testing on all types of shit. Wonder why we have the problems maybe it’s time for the state to leave th union because the American dream by the government is twisted because the government is still allowing all types of drug into the Us tell me I’m wrong cause all type of information is out there to prove you wrong. I may never have the chace to speak in the house of representatives but if I did I bet I could prove why legalizing marijuana/ cannabis could stimulate the us market but we will let the government think there right even tho they have valid points most are completely misguided but it is what it is. I am a American not scared to stand up. 16 million people admit to have used marijuana how many think still do so a land for the people 16 million people out that have used marijuana think you are wrong for it still being illegal. Time for people to completely stand up and stop being scared to fight for it to be legal. Damn I mean as ax pagers look at how many people are in jail for marijuana a victimless crime and we the people pay taxes to keep paying for this come on washington d.c you talk about for the people by the people. Well 16 million people I guess don’t have a voice. That you will listen to so how is it for the people? And let’s go on this point we pay taxes and the marijuana bust are valued at three times then what they are worth so that law can get more money to fight the war on drugs but if the trth was brought forth on the bust I bet you most of the marijuana was wet and most were just plants so you value a 30 million dollar bust on a grower but I bet you 2/3 of that is most likely wet or not dry so. Now we lie to all the Americans I agree to d.a.r.e to keep kids of drugs but keep are kids off of meth crack and her ion. And tell me kids are not doing that stuff. Go to snohomish in Washington state and start there. They are having a big problem in snohomish of herion which is sad. Oh wait it population control we are allowing people to get n all these really bad chemical to keep the world under control huh? How ever you see it. I would love to hear it. I see things from all sides of the coin and agree with parts f things but I bet I could make you really think about the truth marijuana needs to be made legal stop making it a crime”……………………
