Tommy Chong is a lot of things – to a lot of people. For some he was the first comedian to make the American public question their own government’s rationale over its contrived and costly marijuana prohibition. For others he was the old man Stoner “Leo”, that would often join the smoke circle on that 70s show. For those who remember Cheech & Chong’s early material – Chong’s, “Leo” character seemed to be the same Stoner, just a little bit further down the bumpy dirt road…that is life.[nggallery id=903]
In between his ‘high rolling’ Cheech & Chong daze, and joining the crew of that 70’s show, Tommy hit a bit of a bumpy patch. In late 2003 Tommy was caught up in a $12 million federal sting operation, aptly named “operation pipe dreams.” In Tommy’s plea bargain with the federal government he admitted to distributing over 7,500 bubblers, bongs and assorted glass pieces, via his son’s online company named after one of Tommy’s more chronic movies… Nice Dreams.[nggallery id=904]
With the national sentiment beginning to shift towards Tommy’s beliefs – that “marijuana is medicine” at best, or just a great way to relax with your friends at worst. He became the poster boy of High Times magazine, a marriage made in heaven. God…or whatever deity you believe in – if any – has a strange sense of humor sometimes.
On June 11, 2012 when Tommy was set to have a discussion with CNN’s Don Lemon regarding the majority of Americans that sought to legalize marijuana – a national growing trend. Tommy revealed, for the first time on TV that he was battling prostate cancer – and doing so with hemp seed oil.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5RZZH8_Sx0]It is this type of outspoken wisdom and affection for both the recreational and medicinal applications of cannabinoids, regardless of the stigma that society will try and heap on freethinking individuals – that High Times is acknowledging Tommy Chong for in his lifetime achievement award this evening.
Join Tommy tonight – Sunday, February 17, 2013 as he accepts his highly justified award for fighting on behalf of the freedom of this modern day miracle plant. As an early advocate of marijuana law reform through the use of his genius comedy skills, to his willingness to speak in the public arena of both his illness and the cannabis cure for cancer. As a result of his life in the marijuana trenches, High Times magazine is putting Tommy on his rightful pedestal…High up on the shelf, as the reigning king of chronic comedy and common sense.
Celebrate with Tommy tonight at…”The Cup.”
