From June 27-29, many of the world’s preeminent glass artists and the functional art glass community converged on Eugene, Oregon, for the 6th Annual Degenerate Flame Off.
This annual showcase and competition features some of the industry’s best and brightest. 16 artists went head-to-head for all the glass glory, melting original glass with techniques that take years to master. A full slate of 40 glass artists were present giving demonstrations during the three day event.
This year’s event was dedicated to Michael ‘Mermonkey’ Steeler, a well-respected glass artist and member of the community who passed away earlier this year. Known as “Mer” to many and an integral part of DFO from the outset, he is missed by many in the glass industry.
DFO was initially started and (is still hosted) by Cornerstone Glass right out of their studio in Eugene. DFO had humble beginnings, starting back in 2009 and to now blossoming into a premier exhibit with the best glass art has to offer.
The weekend brought glass aficionados from all over to watch demonstrations of the craft with the precision and skill only matched by their peers in the same room. DFO is also a congregation for glass art sales and trades, for artists to talk shop, and for new glassblowers to learn new skills and techniques.
