Willie Nelson Marijuana Strain Review

Strain Overview

The Scoop: Willie Nelson, loved by both country music fans and marijuana aficionados alike, is one of America’s most prolific songwriters and ardent pro-legalization advocates. A longtime fan of great genetics and good weed, his namesake strain is a cross between Vietnamese Black and Highland Nepalese.

The Result: Regardless of whether or not you love his music, this strain is a happy homage the to the old-school landrace gene pool. Providing an elevated state of cognitive thinking, Willie Nelson inspires personal creativity, critical thinking, and a positively blissful perspective on our sometimes-chaotic world.

The Verdict: A 2005 HTCC winner, this strain is truly medicinal. As Willie explained with the help of his old buddy Merle Haggard in one of Mr. Nelson’s apparently autobiographical songs – “I gotta hundred dollar bill, friend you can keep your pills ‘Cause it’s all going to pot.” From Willy’s lips to God’s ears.

Strain Profile

The Science: Not to be confused with ‘Willie’s Reserve’ – the legendary musician’s marijuana brand – the strain, “Willie Nelson” is an F1 hybrid. A sweet-and-sour cross between Vietnamese Black and Highland Nepalese, this strain hits full maturation in approximately 10 – 14 weeks. Which is relatively fast considering its overall genetic profile – chiefly, Sativa.

Appearance: An opaque green that’s reminiscent of lime, Willie Nelson is covered with many of those famous red hairs that made the singer and American icon. Featuring tight knuckle-like buds that glisten with resinous trichomes, Willie’s overall appearance can vary based on cultivation technique and the applicable curing method.

Consistency: Tacky and tight, Willie is one sticky hombre compared to its Sativa siblings. While easily prepared for smoking with scissors and fingers, a grinder is highly recommended for anyone interested preserving the valuable cannabinoids.

Scent: Emitting the smell of sweet earth, lemongrass, and citrus, Willie provides a rare aroma for any Texas-style honky-tonk. Its powerful terpenes are easily detectable even while out “On the Road Again.” Tour buses and households, pretty much anywhere where you smoke it, highwaymen and outlaws will easily track you down and identify this complex scent as potent weed.

Taste: Historic. Like the man this creative strain was named after, its flavor is amazing. Upon the initial inhale, Willie smacks of a dizzying combination of citrus, clean Earth, and the occasional Jolly Rancher candy.

Effect: Thought provoking, contemplative, and inspiring – Willie has been known to replace frustration with an ear-to-ear smile on even the most uptight and overstressed face.

Strain Background: Derived from landrace genetics, this strain’s phenotypes are dominated by its Sativa gene pool. Providing great traits for the indoor cultivators, this strain is primarily recommended for greenhouses when cultivated outside.

Medical UsesGreat as an early-morning motivational smoke; one hit of some Willie Nelson sets the tone for the rest of the morning. Providing an elevated and happy perspective on the new day, Willie helps to minimize daily exhaustion, discomfort, despair and anxiety.

Regardless of how you choose to lop them, it’s critical to keep the Sativa plant squat during its vegetative cycle. Whether it’s low stress training (LST), FIMing, ScrOGing or SOGing, implementing these cultivation techniques early in the vegetative cycle will prevent height headaches during the critical flowering stage.

While I’m not a big fan of country music, I absolutely love the man and the strain.

About Author

Born in Long Beach, raised on the central coast: I surf, dab, burn, and blog – though not necessarily in that order. I’m a husband, a father and a lifelong consumer of connoisseur grade weed. I don’t drink alcohol or consume any other “drugs.” I consider myself to be living proof that weed is not a gateway drug. If it were, I’d be in some serious trouble. Instead, as a 50-year-old ex-realtor that has been smoking weed for nearly 80% of my life (just did the math) … I can only say, marijuana is safer than prescription pills or alcohol could ever hope to be for calming what stirs the savage beast.
