Racism and Prohibition: Kansas State Rep. Defends Ignorance

Marijuana haters, Henry J. Anslinger, and Jeff Sessions have a true friend in Kansas State Rep. Steve Alford (R-124th District).

On display last weekend during a legislative coffee session at St. Catherine Hospital, Rep. Alford defended America’s policy of continued marijuana prohibition.

A bigoted civics lesson loaded with racial innuendo, Rep. Alford inadvertently exposed the race-baiting underbelly of marijuana’s continued prohibition.

While many professional politicians and polls agree that marijuana prohibition is a failed strategy that perpetuates unjust incarceration in the 21st century, the Kansas representative informed a predominantly “all-white crowd” that black marijuana use made prohibition an essential policy of the 1930s.

Embracing Anslinger’s ideology, the Garden City Telegram captured the state representative as he wrestled to answer a question about the potential economic upside of legalization in Kansas:

“What you really need to do is go back in the ’30s, when they outlawed all types of drugs in Kansas (and) across the United States,” Alford said. “What was the reason why they did that? One of the reasons why, I hate to say it, was that the African Americans, they were basically users and they basically responded the worst off to those drugs just because of their character makeup, their genetics and that.”

Recognized as a cynical and ignorant statement after the fact, Rep Alford offered his mea culpa Monday, telling any and all who might listen, “I was wrong, I regret my comments and I sincerely apologize to anyone I have hurt.”

First elected in 2011, Rep. Alford still serves on the Joint Committee on Corrections and Juvenile Justice Oversight but has since been removed as the Chairman of the state’s foster care task force. Apparently now repentant for his outrageous Sunday statement, the 75-year-old Republican will face re-election Nov. 6, 2018.

2015 Kansas Poll

If a 2015 Fort Hays State University poll still rings true, with 63 percent of Kansas voters in support of marijuana legalization, Alford could very well be looking for a new job come Nov. 7.

  1. He got his statements and opinoins from his wife, a magistrate judge that believes cannabis is a gateway drug that affects African Americans disproportionately due to genetic makeup and character development.
Under this same logic, coffee should be banned. You can smell it from car windows, and it’s a gateway drug that leads to heavier stimulant use. The main users of coffee are Caucasian, and Caucasians are the main race in government. They use this drug to wake up early and write laws that have shaped our country into what it has become today. Maybe it really is time to consider caffeine schedule 1.

    • I am in 100% agreement with you Andrew. Caffeine is dangerous as it’s deadly as it can cause pulminory issues/heart problems over long term use, dependence, and can cause other issues as well.

Alcohol and tobacco kill on an extreme scale and tobacco honestly has 0 accepted medical uses(ever heard a “doctor” recommend someone use tobacco for ANY reason?) but yet that remains legal with no change as well. We should ban tobacco if anything but because it’s “embedded” in our culture itll never be. Politicians(rich or wealthy) won’t have THEIR drugs taken away. NO WAY! They want people forced to use THEIR drugs, they don’t want people thinking for themselves and healing with anything that WORKS as that doesn’t keep people sick and make them and the prison Industry insane amounts of money. These people make way more than anyone ever could so they just control everything that way.

That’s why trumps reversing so much Obama. Era things. They don’t want the poor and suffering like me to have a chance. They want us poor and slaves to their greed. I am white and I am embarrassed and disgusted over the overt white supremist attitude this administration is big on. I know trump is trying to play copycat to Russia’s corrupt governmental system as it also favors the rich and powerful.
I’ve been saying this for years but patriotism sadly is almost dead here so is liberty and personal freedom. The gov is trying to incoporate a one side says all mantra associated with systems like communism and dictatorships basically.

Sadly until we have another civil war and the people stand up in outrage over these privacy invading, personal choice killing, one side says all, and bias laws and policies and then people in power get re-arranged and true americans that believe in freedom and respect for everyone not just themselves or a select group only take their place, we will. Continue going down down down and life will get worse and worse sadly.

This guys apology is far from sincere and honest. Would not have said it if it’s not true. False, sick, and bigoted statements like this based on obvious lies, fear, and racism. As can be seen is the driving force of why so much research on the positivity of cannabis is out there, but is ignored because none that shows any benefit(all if them) nothing negative, are disregarded and bindly ignored.

It’s sad how many still Suffer because of the overt greed and corruption in big government/federal/DEA level and beyond.
