Fun Fact: Charlize Theron Gets Weed From Her Mom

Where does your mom fall on the weed acceptance spectrum?

Mine still uses the word “pot” and tells me I “smell high” when I see her, but little does she know, I use cannabis-scented cologne on days I don’t smoke to keep my reputation solid. #destigmatizestoners

Charlize Theron’s mom? All the way on the other end of the spectrum. Theron apparently doesn’t have to worry about what her mom, Gerda Maritz, thinks about her marijuana use at all — because she’s Charlize’s personal weed shopper.

While making a press run stop on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote her new marijuana-centric movie “Gringo,” the Oscar-winning actress set Kimmel straight that she’s no cannabis novice.

“I’m always willing to try anything,” Theron explained. “I mean, you’ve got one life to live. Why not?”

The self-proclaimed 8-year veteran smoker admitted she took a long break after getting an extreme case of the munchies a while back. The break didn’t last though, as Theron and her mom both have trouble sleeping and mutually decided to give edibles a shot.

To Theron’s surprise, her fellow experiment subject made the first move and went to the dispensary to obtain research materials.

“Last week she showed up at my house, literally drove in her little tennis outfit and brought me a little container and just left it on my kitchen table,” Theron told Kimmel. “She was like, ‘So I got some blueberry-covered chocolate ones, but if you want it faster-acting, you should go for the mints. Those you suck, and it works faster.’ “

Baby Boomers and their parents were raised in a different era, when cannabis was even more demonized than it is today and misinformation ruled the day. So, it’s somewhat understandable that the older generations are a tad slower to reach cannabis enlightenment, realizing the plant can offer them so much more — directly and indirectly — than previously thought.

And they are, in droves. Seniors are the fastest growing segment of cannabis users in America by a longshot.

“She said, ‘I went to the store by myself,'” Theron said of Maritz. “I have this image of her in the store. She’s just not this kind of person, and buying marijuana she had like a full experience.”

Good for you, Gerda!
