U.S. Health Secretary Says “No Such Thing as Medical Marijuana”

At a press conference in Ohio on Friday, United States Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was addressing concerns about the opioid epidemic when he made some noteworthy comments regarding cannabis.

When asked how medical marijuana could potentially play a part in curtailing harmful opioid addiction, Azar responded, “There really is no such thing as medical marijuana.”

Ohio is about to roll out its medical marijuana program. The statement sparked discussion online by many curious about its meaning.

Azar clarified his sentiments on medical marijuana by saying, “There is no FDA approved use of marijuana, a botanical plant. I just want to be very clear about that.”

While many studies point to marijuana as a possible replacement or supplement to prescription painkillers, the federal government continues to ignore its efficacy in their search for an alternative therapeutic option for chronic and acute pain.

“We are devoting hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars of research at our National Institutes of Health as part of the historic $13 billion opioid and serious mental illness program that the President and Congress are funding,” Azar explained. “Over $750 million just in 2019 alone is going to be dedicated towards the National Institutes of Health working in public-private partnership to try and develop the next generation of pain therapies that are not opioids.”

Azar’s representation of our government’s stance on cannabis is technically true as the plant isn’t recognized for its medicinal properties at the federal level. This refusal to allow research keeps marijuana at its current Schedule I level and stalls the research necessary to explore its therapeutic potential.

Azar previously served as president of pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly’s United States operations, where drug prices rose across the board under his leadership.

  1. This Azar dudet is a complete and utter imbecile!!!! Apparently he doesn’t know his own office and what they have done in the way of cannabis research. Here is the link to the patent on cannabis, check out who the Assignee is!! Now tell me we should listen to someone who doesn’t even know what his own office has done and received. And to top it off they put an imbecile like him in a position to represent their office knowing very well he would never endorse something that his past position with a pharmaceutical company has been fighting (through lobbyists) to keep illegal. Well if more Americans would learn to properly educate themselves about cannabis and stop allowing the BOOB-TUBE (TV) to dictate what they should or should not do. I’m not a big fan of Trump but he is so right about what our news media is doing and portraying, all this FAKE NEWS!!!!

  2. This is what you get when you put someone from the pharmaceutical industry. This clown is just a shill for his industry.

    • In 1979 the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare urged doctors to avoid prescribing the dangerously addictive Darvon, produced by Eli Lilly. Alex Azar was hired as an executive with Lilly in 2007 but the drug wasn’t taken out of distribution till 2010, despite all the warnings. Obviously his main concern was Lilly’s financial health…..not American citizens. What a putz.

    • yeah actually lol, doctors will tell you its good to drink 1 beer a day to flush your kidneys LOL, so kinda

  3. That guy needs fired, if there is no such thing as MMJ then why does the government hold the patient. why does every state that has MMJ report a minimum of 25% in reduced opoid deaths. why have places like Harvard, Yale, the united cancer institute of america, ext…… and many more produced scientific studies showing that MMJ can cure cancer, treat alzhimers, dementia, pain, addiction, ext…… this man is clearly only in his position to get rich from lobbiest, and other organizations that throw him money to lie and keep propaganda going to keep opiods and other pharma drugs making money. what a piece of shit.

  4. Michael Davis on

His claim is the opinion of a non researcher and non doctor. Alex Azar has a BA in government and economics and a law degree from Yale. HE IS NOT QUALIFIED to make the statement. I on the other hand have the title Doctor and say yes it is a medicine just not a perfected medicine. And Big Pharma there are no Perfect Medicines just that cannabis doesn’t have the side effects of heart attack, stroke and death.

    • Michael Davis on

However, people that advocate MMJ as a medicine make statements about what cannabis CAN treat not what it WILL effectively treat. Cannabis CAN treat a myriad of ailments but is a therapeutic because we need a lot more research. When you say it CAN treat a disease such as cancer it means there are case studies that show it has effectively treated those ailments. That is not the same as Research that results in expected outcomes from the treatment. Cancer chemotherapy for instance do not have very good results for cancer except a limited number and often times end up with very poor however financially rewarding results.

It’s all about money for them. They could care less about the deaths occurring due to opioid meds. And in treating mental health issues without serious side effects. Side effects often cause people to stop their psych meds which can lead to self-medicating, suicide, and homicide. I’m not a doctor or an academic. With marijuana I have been able to stop 8 medications, 3 of which were narcotic. Nobody, nobody can tell me differently.

  6. LaVerne Stewart - McCaulley on

He is a a……. he needs to have a seat. He will be singing a different tune when his family member is doing the medical marijuana oh but he will keep that hush hush

  7. Medical cannabis was an integral component in 4 psychotherapy sessions over 2 weeks that caused my PTSD to go into total remission! I suffered from this disorder for decades. It didn’t just treat my PTSD symptoms, it helped cure it.
Clowns like this need to be ignored!

Mr. Azar is no dummy as head of Eli Lilly he has a lot of stock in pharmaceutical Companies making him millions. Now he has positioned him self in a position to protect his interest and in this process marijuana is the fall guy as it would cause the big bad pharmaceutical to lose
Millions and Mr. Azar’s nest egg. He and the government do not want Marijuana to be beneficial as there there political contributions
From the pharmaceutical Companies could be in jeperdy.

I,too, have been able to change a regiment of 9+ different High $pharma meds w/over 225 pills weekly to only 4 meds stopping 2 narcotics, one opioid, one benzo! I was placed on this necessary pharma regiment 3+years ago, while being treated at the UCSF Neurogastric Motility Clinic in San Fran. My docs not only knew of my cannabis use, but encouraged it as a safe and effective alternative to big pharma meds which make our federal government., big pharma corps, and various lobbyist groups. The problem? Our creator failed to get a restrictive pap tent on this throughout the ages medicinal use created and grown freely substance! Again the problem? No patent to restrict use of, and allow for great monetary exchange by these same money-hungry groups which run our nation stars. NoMMJ? Pishwah! No $’s for our federal gov., less $ for USPS in shipping, and no lobbyists for natural, chemical free medication. None of my MMJ Comes with warnings of eminent heart attack, strokes or death. President Trump has lost my vote over this one. Piutting an ex-Eli Lilly drug guy over this highly charged research on MMJ. It is like putting the heirs to the Coors conclomerate over whether the Temperance movement would benefit alcoholics. Absurd, President Trump. Simply absurd!

I have non alcoholic chronic pancreatitis and axonal neuropathy, two seriously painful conditions. I have been able to stop using opiates and benzodiazepines thanks to something that apparently does not exist. For an illusion, Medical marijuana is pretty damn effective.

  11. “…try and develop the next generation of pain therapies that are not opioids.”

No Azar, you blithering idiot….we already HAVE pain therapy which isn’t an opioid. It’s called cannabis.

  12. Steven Carl Griffin on

Azar mentions the FDA and the hairs on my neck stand up immediately. In the period of 2001-2010 the FDA(Fucking Dumb Assholes), approved 222 drugs into the US market for use. All ready to go as usual with no problems forseen and only good expectations for everyone to enjoy. WRONG. In that same time period 123 had post market safety events having to relable the risks not yet discovered until us human rats were used to find out the truth. 71 had FDA springing into action letting the public know through a tax paid communication and mass infocommercials the dangers inherent of using these drugs. Three had to be pulled off the market shelf because it litteraly killed some of the patients prescribed these meds by Drs. using the FDA(Following Direct Authority) of its paid for officials put into position by paid for congressmen.
Let’s look at some of the other swell decisions made so wisely by the FDA(Fools Dealing Agony) over a few years.
    Just to name a few…
A recent bad move by the same FDA and another useless Dept. Ofa Waste In Money was allowing antibiotics to be left in animal feed in the market place. Thus knowingly placing everyone at further risk in the lowering of out on natural bodies antibiotic resistance cells.
So the next time the FDA(Feed Drugs to Anybody), steps up to the plate, remember their missing one out of three swings at drugs for a .333 average. Great for most clean up batters in MLB, but not so great for the American Public.
And they get paid for this?

  13. Eric B Dailey on

When the tobacco industry was fined billions of dollars for their products safety. Why is the pharmaceutical industry getting paid 750 million dollars in 2019 for research? aka( new homes, boats, cars and vacations). I don’t recall the tobacco industry getting paid to find safer cigarettes. The FDA has no credibility, I don’t believe a thing they say.

Cannabis will help millions of Americans. Many will die anyway in certain cases, but will at least be more comfortable in passing.

  14. Jeff Newberry on

I will start by saying Alex Azar is the last person who should speak about cannabis, clearly a topic he knows nothing about. He simply repeats what propaganda he was taught probably his whole life.

The truth is cannabis isn’t medical. Cannabinoids occur naturally in our bodies and controls and regulates many parts/functions of our bodies. When your body doesn’t produce enough endocannabinoids your facing a deficiency. Medications do not treat deficiencies. Cannabis should be part of our daily diet as other vitamins and minerals are. When your body doesn’t produce enough endocannabinoids your immune system goes haywire from being unregulated which causes auto Immune ailments and nerve degenerative ailments just to name a few. When immigrants sailed across the seas and got scurvy there was no medication and oranges didn’t get classified as MEDICATION.

Cannabis SHOULD be apart of everyone’s lives today and I don’t suggest smoking cannabis to get high. Their are many ways to use cannabis and of course some ways are better then others and if Decarboxylation (might b spelled wrong but its the removal of oxygen molecule from THCA that in turn becomescomponent THC the only psychoactive component) does not happen your cannabis will NOT produce a high. Education is greatly needed on this subject. Lawmakers and our government are the last ones who wants you to know the truth about cannabis and they have been holding up progression for over 70 years now. Cannabis was used for well over 3,000 years with not a single death. Stop letting your loved ones die from deficiencies. Educate yourself.

  15. Jeff Newberry on

I agree Randy drugs ARE bad but calling an all natural harmless plant that’s been used for over 3000 years does not warrant calling Cannabis a drug. That’s government propaganda my friend. Drugs are typically synthetic or modified while Cannabis is not. Even if using Cannabis to make a concentration of the essential oils does not deem Cannabis a drug since nothing is required to be added.

    • Once you burn that natural plant you cause a chemical reaction. Is that natural? You tell me. I’m a supporter of medicinal and recreational usage. Just playing devil’s advocate

      • Jeff Newberry on

Many chemicals occur naturally my friend. You body is full of many very natural chemicals. But smoking Cannabis is the worst way to use Cannabis since most of the phytocannabinoids will be burned up and wasted. Its better to use a Vaporizer if you must smoke but the best ways to use Cannabis are by extracting the essential oils (cannabinoids) from the plant material. The extracting process can be done many ways.

        • You obviously aren’t a stoner. That’s way too much work for someone who gets stoned on a daily basis man. Hahahahahahahahaha. If weed is bad how come when I use too much it makes me sleep instead of choking to death on my own vomit?

          • Jeff Newberry on

Randy you leave me speechless I’ve no idea how to respond to that lol

            Drugs are bad Mmmmkay

          • Lol. Stick to weed Jeff you won’t go wrong. Try burning it sometime tho you won’t be disappointed I promise
