5 Things You Should Do When Stoned and Need to Come Down Fast

Whether you didn’t know your limits, your edible kicked in a few hours late, or you took a huge bong rip just before getting called into work, we’ve all experienced the agony of being way too stoned and needing to come down fast.

The important thing to remember in times like these: While an intense high can feel uncomfortable, it’s not a life or death situation. No deaths from overdose of marijuana have ever been reported. Most symptoms of “greening out” fade within a few minutes to a couple of hours. Which, of course, can feel like a lifetime when you’re baked out of your mind.

Luckily, there are a few tactics you can try in the meantime to reduce the effects of THC and start to feel normal again. Here are five things to do when you’re too high and need to come down fast.

1. Take really deep breaths

If you get too high, it’s natural to start freaking out. Unfortunately, stressing only makes things worse. Deep belly breathing, also called diaphragmatic breathing, instantly activates the “relaxation response” of your parasympathetic nervous system. This causes your blood pressure, heart rate, and adrenaline and cortisol levels to return to normal.

When diaphragmatic breathing, visualize filling up the lower part of your lungs and abdomen with air, then exhaling slowly. Try inhaling through your nose and exhaling through pursed lips, like you’re blowing out a candle. Repeat as necessary.

2. Hydrate

One of the worst things about getting too high is the dry mouth that makes you feel like you’re chewing on a cotton ball. Drinking plenty of cold water can alleviate this unpleasant sensation and help you come down faster.

The science behind it is pretty straightforward. When you smoke, eat an edible, or otherwise consume marijuana, the THC surges through your bloodstream and makes its way to the brain. Since our blood is largely made of water, upping your water intake can help flush the THC from your body and make you come down faster.

3. Consume CBD

You’re probably aware that CBD is an active compound in cannabis that can help reduce anxiety and inflammation without making you feel stoned. What you might not know is that CBD can also balance your buzz and soften the psychoactive effects of THC when you’ve smoked too much.

If you’re too high and need to come down fast, reach for a CBD tincture or oil and put a few drops under your tongue. Hold it there for 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing. A tincture is the fastest way to reap the benefits of CBD because the capillaries in your mouth absorb the ingredients quickly and send them straight to your bloodstream.

4. Reach for a lemon

Lemons have long been used as an antidote to cannabis, and can lessen the psychoactive effects of THC. The citrus fruit contains a terpene called limonene that is rapidly absorbed by the body and is known for its medicinal properties. It is thought that the anti-anxiety effects of limonene help relieve the uncomfortable feelings associated with being too stoned.

To use lemons as a marijuana antidote, make some lemonade from scratch. Squeeze the juice from a lemon into a glass of water and add a little bit of zest from the peel. The outer rind has the highest concentration of limonene and will help counteract your buzz.

5. Chew on black peppercorns

Similar to lemons, there is a terpene in black pepper called beta-caryophyllene that can help you cope with the anxiety that comes with being too high. Beta-caryophyllene binds to the same cannabinoid receptors in the brain as THC, producing a calming effect on the mind and body.

Chewing on two or three black peppercorns — or smelling ground peppercorns — will block your THC receptors and help you come down quickly.

And, if you happen to be sitting at the control panel of a refinery, chemical plant or gas processing facility and you dimly notice the pressure in a critical unit is rising, say a brief prayer — but keep it brief because your ass is about to be blown sky high (along with your co-workers and innocent people for blocks and blocks around you).

    • Michael Smith on

lol ok, people in critical sectors will still have drug screening in place so if you are trying to start something troll somewhere else

      • U need to take a few tokens and chill, he makes sense. There’s a place and time for weed. Be responsible

    • And who said anything about using cannabis while sitting at the control panel at a refinery, chemical plant or gas processing facility but you’re paranoid self? Relax the world isn’t going to explode because people are smoking weed, it’s been going on a long time and we’re still here.

  2. When I used to get high, when I felt like I was going into that panic mode, I’m going to die phase, sitting in front of cold air helped a lot. I used an A/C and sat in front of the vent. Or if it was cold outside, I’d go sit outside for about 30 minutes. Something about the cold always helped me. Maybe it can help someone else…of course this being the beginning of summer, cold air is hopefully plentiful 🙂 Maybe now that I’ve read these tips, I’ll try going back to the old ways of my youth and try it again…what’s the worst that can happen? Panic attack…eh….I know how to handle them now, so thanks ever for the advice. I truly mean that…Thank you! 🙂

    • Cheryle,
Try looking for an Indica. They give more of a body buzz than a Sativa. A Sativa gives a ‘brain high’ and is usually the type of cannabis that has anxiety as a side effect.
Indica’s are my preference as I don’t like the ‘head highs’ that a Sativa will give.
Like the suggestion above I’ll vape some CBDs (Remedy) or take some CBD drops, again it’s usually the Remedy strain.

      • Lance Hogben on

I just read last night that there are no drug varieties of sativa, and all smokeable weed with THC &c. are actually different strains of indica AND the latecomer to the world weed scene, afghanica ( from which hashish is made). The different appearances of strains are largely about leaf shape.

        • You do not mention where you read that, but it does not seem a reliable source… Truth is, that all industrial hemp is Cannabis Sativa Sativa and that the industrial hemp-strains contains too little THC to get a high from it when smoked. But. A crow is a black bird, but not all black birds are crows. Organic, original Cannabis Sativa Sativa does naturally contain THC and does give a high when smoked. Several fine strains have been developed, pure or in combination with ssp. Indica and/or ssp. Ruderalis. Hashish can be made from all varieties of hemp that contain THC.

          • Not hemp ,hemp is male plant ,Cannabis is what your trying to say (I think) female plant ,hemp is Industrial ,clothing, and CBD flower doesn’t get you high ,Cannabis thc cbd cbg “ “ “ gets you high and kills chronic pain

  3. I always heard to eat sweets. Straight sugar or honey will bring the high down fast.

Supposedly, this is why cannabis users are always getting the munchies; It’s the body’s natural way of bringing itself back into balance, after getting too high.

  4. If you feel that anxiety or panic remind yourself your high and pay no attention to the.wave
    It works for me

Solid job nipping that one in the bud. Drug screening decisions depend on individual policies of senior managent. Marijuana is somewhat convoluted right now in states that have already legalized it. It really comes down to supply and demand for skilled talented workers. In a strong market, the cpmpany has options but in upper management It seems less used because finding good leadership is difficult and they may avoid the subject entirely lest lose a potential money maker. Too tired to edit, please forgive me

  6. Excellent article!! I wish I would have seen this a few months ago when I got way too stoned. I was really scared and called poison control. Looking back it’s funny 😄

  7. That’s so funny about calling poison control, my husband called 911 on himself while I was at work because he wanted to try it because he had never smoked before and thought he could handle it like I could…so when I got home all my neighbors came up to me and told me what happened. I was laughing so hard and I went inside and he was passed out. My kids, whom are adults now got such a kick out of it, and still tease him about. He never tried it again! That’s ok… more for me.lol

    • Since he won’t try it again…that’s more for you, accent the positive! :-)Funny story by the way.

    • Brian Cammaressi on

Im laughing so hard my face hurts and im crying….thats the most hilarious story I have heard in a very very long time!

  8. Sounds good and accuract also breathing in steam and bedtime or any soothing tea last thing sweat it out in the day.

  9. Great info . Keep sharing. Eat sweets and lots of water usually helped me. Best practice is to know your limit.
    Thank you

  10. Cbd vape works for me make sure it’s a higher concentration like 300mg cbd or more I get relief in few minutes brings me down a few notches gets me out of that uncomfortable high

  11. I need to try canabis but I don’t live in a place where it is available to smoke it. I have chronic pain and I would like to get off my Pain meds. What is available for me to try? Thanks

    • You can get cbd legally online, and some health food stores are now selling cbd capsules . Cbd is fully legal, and is the pain relieving part of marijuana.

    • Glenda Strickland on

cbd. it’ll make you mellow but not high. you can get it online, at smoke shops. Fda has made it ok recently. You can get tablets, oil to put under your tongue and candies. CBD IS THE THING! I am a migraine sufferer and i smoke cbd flower and its great. Lotions are actually very effectiv

      • CBD is not fedrerally regulated by the FDA…… false…. sorry folks, if you are not purchasing from a licensed producer you could be getting straight olive oil or other harmful products.

  12. Wish I could smoke weed, but that whole security clearznce thing and job gets in the way… don’t get me wrong … once in a blue moon.
When I went to San Diego back in February…. I must say, the whole legal scene and dispensary thing was awesome, coming from Texas where it still is not legal a nd the town where I live will still put you in jail for it and probation and what ever happened to my pursuit of life, liberty and happiness??? JUST the man keeping us down…. so I say, if you can… Do It! And if the man says you can’t? Well, I was gonna say do it anyways….. but I got a lot of bills….. so be careful when and where you do it at my friends….

My hubby said to drink Milk. And it will bring you down. Not fast but it does help. I unfortunately, ate a cookie that
was full of Weed, it was at my Oldest Grandson’s Wedding!! I was too high to even dance with him or to dance with my Husband!!! I am so hurt that it happened, which I can not do anything about or talk about!! So be very careful what you eat!! Wish I knew about the other ways to come down sooner!! Never again!

  14. If having spinning, cold sweats, faint (vaso-vagel) it helps to get against a bed, couch, chair, lie down on the floor on your back, with your legs elevated on the bed, or couch, etc. Water before as well. Just being quiet in that position helps. I am going to remember the lemon and peppercorn tips as well!

When you get too high….You must be with your best grounded friend like KEVIN MCCARTHY. And then everything will be okay.

  16. How about just taking One or Two puffs enjoy your high know your limits its not rocket science, moderation is the key. It could very well be my age speaking now because I still enjoy a holy shit that was a rip and a half of some good shit. Butt please people just like alcohol know your limits and thanks for all come down ideas.

  17. Thanks for this post, very informative. I quite agree with you because cbd is completely non-psychoactive and help soften the psychoactive effects of thc

  18. Nice post, everybody need to read this post to avoid being stoned, because my people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge.

  19. When I was young, smoking in high school, cannabis made me feel so good, relaxed and frankly, lazy. Now that I tried it for my anxiety, it worked for a while, (1 year?) then started causing anxiety easily.

I think it may be that all of the remedies my be placebo effect only or mostly.
