If you’re a luxury-led traveler who enjoys unique vacations with a personal touch, you’ll be happy to know that California is in the midst of a cannabis travel and tourism evolution. The cannabis tourism scene is experiencing an innovation boom with fine dining experiences, guided pairing events, and terms such as appellations and cultivars becoming more commonplace.
In sophisticated fashion, art, music, nature, and unique immersive venues are all part of the work-in-progress luxury formula in cannabis travel.
As Jamie Evans of the Herb Somm, a cannabis blog and lifestyle brand, previously told Marijuana.com, “The demand for high-end cannabis events and experiences has increased tremendously this past year.”
Moonlit Moveable Feast
The Palm Springs-based High Dining Club has created an intimate, exotic, and authentic experience for the adventurous cannabis seeker. The High Dining Club curated Moonlit Moveable Feast, a four-course dining experience meant to be a mini-Burning Man bazaar of sorts in the deserts of Joshua Tree, California. (Disclosure: I have been one of the “roaming educators” invited to educate guests during previous events).
The feast takes place only a few select dates a year in order to allow guests to dine by full moonlight, and aims to indulge all the senses from the moment guests arrive with glassblowing, performers, musicians, sound therapy and stargazing.
Barbie Sommars, High Dining’s chief experience creator, told Marijana.com, “We believe in enjoying cannabis with intention and meticulously curate this multi-sensory experience with that in mind, right down to the dinner guests we’ve invited to mingle with our ticketed guests.
“It’s a different kind of education. Many of our guests leave speechless when trying to describe their experience and once they process it all, that is our ‘payday.’ That’s the greatest reward; to know we played a role in changing one’s connection to cannabis, to themselves, to each other, and the natural world that surrounds them.”
The Fine Dining Experience
Sonoma-based TSO, a cannabis lifestyle brand, is taking its cues from the wine industry. The teams produce a series called Elevated Events, that aim to “advance the dialogue and provide essential education regarding safe consumption,” Devika Maskey, founder of TSO, told Marijuana.com. “From fine dining and winemaker paired dinners to yoga wellness retreats, we will continue to create new and informative experiences.”
At a TSO fine-dining Elevated Event, attendees experience a curated four-course meal paired with wine and cannabis. Local, small-batch flower is paired aromatically with local wine and food to create an experience that offers that familiar wine country polish that Sonoma and Napa counties are renowned for. Small jars of premium sun-grown cannabis flower from the Emerald Triangle are peppered throughout the table, and a cannabis sommelier educates the guests about the coursed pairings and explains why the terpene profiles complement each course.
“By relating cannabis to something people are familiar with, like wine, we make it more approachable. An elevated experience around cannabis is helping end that lazy stoner stigma and shows that cannabis can be for the sophisticated connoisseur, too,” Maskey said.
Whether you’re a bohemian at heart or a connoisseur of high-end, exclusive experiences, the cannabis tourism market is bound to have something for you. The curated cannabis experience niche is still in the earliest stages, but the innovative advances are exciting.
